Saving space on your computer - Tip #1

Did You Know 1 Comment »

This is a very simple tip.  Erase all Thumbs.db files on your computer.

What is this file?

Windows creates a file called "Thumbs.db" for folders that contain pictures. The Thumbs.db file caches a thumbnail version of the pictures in the folder, making it quicker to view the thumbnail images each time the folder is opened.  It's a dynamic file, created on-the-fly, on each directy if one doesn't exist yet.  The Thumbs.db file is often viewable when the "Show Hidden Files" option is turned on in Windows. To activate this setting, first open a folder in Windows. Then choose "Folder Options" from the Tools menu.  Once you activate this setting, you will be able to search for all the Thumbs.db files on your computer and wipe them out.  I did it and saved a lot of space. Be sure to delete your recycle bin too to save space for items no longer needed.

How to Remove the Thumbs.db File forever...

You can delete the Thumbs.db file by simply dragging it to the Recycle Bin. However, the file will be regenerated each time you open the folder, which means deleting the file has little effect. To prevent the Thumbs.db file from being created, follow these instructions:

   1. Open a folder (or the specific folder you want to change).
   2. Select "Folder Options" from the View menu.
   3. Click the View tab.
   4. Check the "Do not cache thumbnails" option (see below).
   5. Click "OK" to apply the change and close the window (or click "Appy to All Folders" to make the change systemwide).

RetailMeNot.com is the first place to stop when shopping

Hello everyone!  I have saved SOOO much money by using this site.  The RetailMeNot.com service is a free and easy way to find online coupon codes. Enter these codes at the checkout page of participating merchants for instant discounts.

Background: Did you know when buying items and services online there are often great discounts readily available?  During the payment process many online stores will have a field to enter a coupon or promotion code. Entering a special code will give you a discounted rate or free extras.

Instructions:
STEP 1: Make a note of the online store you are buying something from. For example: http://www.amazon.com Or even just: amazon.com
STEP 2: Visit http://RetailMeNot.com
STEP 3: Enter the address from step 1 into the box and press the "Get Coupons" button
STEP 4: You should now be presented with any coupons available for that store. Make a note of them.
STEP 5: Click the 'use it' link next to the coupon and proceed to enter your coupon code when asked at checkout.

With any luck you should now have a great discount or bonus!  There are many other coupon sites but be aware, many of them are redirecting sites that try to gain profit with your clicking.  I've seen RetailMeNot.com to be one of the best!

Flex Stock Chart (embedable)

Flex , Investment 2 Comments »

I'm an investor and have noticed stock charting capabilities evolve towards a good direction during the Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 era.  Although stock charts are nothing new, I came across a nice site that allows users to embed their own customizable charts from Wikiinvest.  It's actually a pretty powerful widget that allows you to hold the mouse down over the chart and you can pan it from left to right. You can also hover over the charting line and you will get the price, date, price, and volume, information.  Best of all..., it's created using Adobe Flex technology and a Wiki.  Very Web 2.0!  Take a look at the Boeing stock below:
