Saving space on your computer - Tip #1

Did You Know 1 Comment »

This is a very simple tip.  Erase all Thumbs.db files on your computer.

What is this file?

Windows creates a file called "Thumbs.db" for folders that contain pictures. The Thumbs.db file caches a thumbnail version of the pictures in the folder, making it quicker to view the thumbnail images each time the folder is opened.  It's a dynamic file, created on-the-fly, on each directy if one doesn't exist yet.  The Thumbs.db file is often viewable when the "Show Hidden Files" option is turned on in Windows. To activate this setting, first open a folder in Windows. Then choose "Folder Options" from the Tools menu.  Once you activate this setting, you will be able to search for all the Thumbs.db files on your computer and wipe them out.  I did it and saved a lot of space. Be sure to delete your recycle bin too to save space for items no longer needed.

How to Remove the Thumbs.db File forever...

You can delete the Thumbs.db file by simply dragging it to the Recycle Bin. However, the file will be regenerated each time you open the folder, which means deleting the file has little effect. To prevent the Thumbs.db file from being created, follow these instructions:

   1. Open a folder (or the specific folder you want to change).
   2. Select "Folder Options" from the View menu.
   3. Click the View tab.
   4. Check the "Do not cache thumbnails" option (see below).
   5. Click "OK" to apply the change and close the window (or click "Appy to All Folders" to make the change systemwide).

RetailMeNot.com is the first place to stop when shopping

Did You Know , Investment , Discounts 8 Comments »

Hello everyone!  I have saved SOOO much money by using this site.  The RetailMeNot.com service is a free and easy way to find online coupon codes. Enter these codes at the checkout page of participating merchants for instant discounts.

Background: Did you know when buying items and services online there are often great discounts readily available?  During the payment process many online stores will have a field to enter a coupon or promotion code. Entering a special code will give you a discounted rate or free extras.

Instructions:
STEP 1: Make a note of the online store you are buying something from. For example: http://www.amazon.com Or even just: amazon.com
STEP 2: Visit http://RetailMeNot.com
STEP 3: Enter the address from step 1 into the box and press the "Get Coupons" button
STEP 4: You should now be presented with any coupons available for that store. Make a note of them.
STEP 5: Click the 'use it' link next to the coupon and proceed to enter your coupon code when asked at checkout.

With any luck you should now have a great discount or bonus!  There are many other coupon sites but be aware, many of them are redirecting sites that try to gain profit with your clicking.  I've seen RetailMeNot.com to be one of the best!

Introducing an electric vehicle that finally looks nice

Green , Sports Cars , Did You Know 2 Comments »

So I was channel surfing the other day and came across a blip about this incredible looking car, Tesla!  Tesla Motors has designed a 100% electrical vehicle that runs on batteries.  It looks nice too!  It is in production right now and you can get your own.  If you got one, you would be basically paying $100,000 for the base model that gives you 2 cents per mile.  WOW!  Not really bad when you consider your ROI.  So here's the rest of the scoop...  The 2008 Tesla Roadster is in production now, it's 100% electric, it goes 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds (better than a $500,000 Ferrari), it has an incredible 13,000 RPM redline (try that with a fuel vehicle), it gets a staggering 256 MPG equivalent, and about 220 miles per charge (which most fuel highend sports cars get anyway).  It takes about 2 to 3 hours to charge.

Bottom line, I'm impressed.  Finally a 100% electrical vehicle that looks nice.  It blows the pants off any over priced "green vehicle" out there that uses gasoline still.  Dollar for dollar, I think this is actually a sweet investment for anyone looking for a great designed 2-seater sports car that can beat a Ferrari at a fraction of the cost.  No carbon footprint too!  Check out their web site at http://www.teslamotors.com/.

Get Human ~ please

Did You Know 1 Comment »

Did you know that there's an online database that summarizes how to get through all the computerized voices so you can talk to a human for help on things?   I've had this bookmarked for a while now and I use it when I need to dial-in to the various services so I can finish my tasks more quickly rather than hanging on the phone and talking to a computer.  The part I can't stand is when the computer repeats my phone number I just typed in for validation ~ pleaseeee....

The GetHuman.com™ movement was created from the voices of millions of consumers who want to be treated with dignity when they contact an enterprise for customer support.  Their goal is to convince enterprises that providing high quality customer service and having satisfied customers costs much less than providing low quality customer service and having unsatisfied customers.

This works great for me and I hope you find this link handy: GetHuman.comWalt Tetschner created GetHuman and deserves great applause!  Nice job!

UPDATED!!! Oct 15, 2008:  Just found this site. http://dialahuman.com/  It's basically the same thing.
